Backyard Garden Design

This Backyard Garden Design is a small space garden that packs a lot of detail and a lot of entertainment space. If you have a small space and entertaining is your thing, then this is the garden for you.

This small backyard is a long narrow space, typical for California, but it will work for folks in other parts of the country as well. It spans the back of the house with a small slope in the back.

The kitchen is in the back of the house which makes the BBQ area very convenient. Yours does not have to be situated this way, but it does have advantages.

An oasis outside the master bedroom makes for a great place to spend time when you just want to relax and forget about the worries of your world. Lattice screens help to screen off the rest of the yard to make this your private space.

A deck outside the french doors of the bedroom leads to a small waterfall which creates the sound of rushing water blocking out the sounds of the world and adding to the relaxing feel of this getaway.

A couple of lounges on the deck are the perfect place to read a book with a glass of wine while taking in the beautiful garden or for a more close up view, there is a bench  right next to the waterfall for more up close viewing.

That's it for the overview of our Backyard Garden Design, take a look around for all the details of the plan.

You Can Download this Plan

If you would like to use this Backyard Garden Design for your own, you can right click on the plan above and save it to your computer, then you can either print it on your own, or send to your local copy center and have it printed.

You can then take it to your local licensed contractor and he will modify to fit to your particular yard shape & size or you may choose it install it yourself.

Or, you may choose to do both, have a contractor do the hard part, installing the hardscape and you can then install the plants and details yourself. Whichever path you choose, keep in mind your time constraints and a realistic expectation of your carpentry skills.

Due to varying climate and growing conditions across our continent, it would be impossible to list the plants for this Backyard Garden Design that would work everywhere.

You can though, order a set of plans that is customized for your region with a list of plants that will give you a similar look to these but will grow in your area.

Our 5 page Garden Plan Package will include the Plan View shown here along with a Plants and Materials List showing plants keyed to the plan that will do well in your area and
a materials list showing what is used for the hardscape.

There is something for everyone in this Backyard Garden Plan, the Master Retreat, the Outdoor Kitchen and the Conversation Terrace.

As I like to do, I'll discuss  the components of this Backyard Garden Design, each of these areas and the design considerations of each.

Exposed aggregate concrete decking throughout along with a retaining wall that spans the entire length of the yard help to unify the three "outdoor rooms" that flow seamlessly form one to another.

Common finishes that are used throughout also help to tie the whole backyard together, even though you sense three distinctive areas.

The Hub: The Outdoor Kitchen

The Outdoor Kitchen is the star of this show, this is the main gathering place in the backyard. I have designed a counter along the back of the house which houses the BBQ grill,
a peninsula extends our from the house and houses a sink.

The twin level design gives the chef lots of counterspace at a nice height, and lets the guests have their own counter at a comfortable height.

A refrigerator is a nice convenience for chilled glasses and beverages. There are a lot of options available for outdoor kitchens, be careful, you can easily get carried away and spend a fortune on them.

I like to caution my clients to really think about how likely they are to really use those accessories unless you have an unlimited budget in which case...just get one of everything!

A flat screen television makes for a lot of entertainment on game days.  An awning that folds in & out provides shade and relief from the sun of can be retracted at night or when you just want to enjoy a sunny morning.

I like a built in Outdoor Kitchen over the prefab units that were so popular a few years ago. Normally constructed of concrete block, ours has a stone exterior that adds such a nice, classy look.

The countertop is made of small glass tiles, which has benefits and some drawbacks. It is very attractive and durable, but tile has grout, and grout can get stained.

You will want to seal it, and will have to clean & seal about once a year to keep it up.

Alternative materials for the counter are poured-in-place Concrete, Granite, Slate, or many other possiblities, each with it's own advantages and drawbacks.

You will be wise to explore each at your local materials yard, and discuss with the representative what those various maintenance items involve.

Master Bedroom Retreat

The Master Bedroom Retreat part of this Backyard Garden Design will become one of your favorite areas of this backyard. French doors off of the bedroom lead onto a deck made from a recycled wood product so it is basically maintenance free and last forever.

I have chosen a light wood color, you can choose from an array of colors, one that will complement the colors of the bedroom so it looks seamless from inside. Decorative
lattice screens divide this area from the rest of the backyard and also look nice as a wall of this outdoor room.

A concrete circular concrete patio at the end of the deck offers a close-up view of the waterfall. A bench is placed in this area for a comfortable spot to take in the view.

The small slope is tamed by the retaining wall which serves to contain the slope and extend the usable space. It is faced with stone which adds a very classy look. If your budget is a consideration, it could also be faced with stucco or textured concrete.

A second retractable awning is mounted to the house to provide shade on hot days yet also gives the option of staying back on days when you want to soak in the sun.

Trees are placed to give further privacy to this area along with various shrubs that are permanent yet give a splash of color. Ferns around the waterfall lend an authentic look
to the area.

The Conversation Terrace

The Conversation Terrace is a special part of this Backyard Garden Plan. The homeowner wanted an area for couches and a firepit. She wanted this area to be able to be used
rain or shine.

This area is situated outside the dining room of the house and is easily accessible from the home. A wood structure has been constructed to support a series of canvas awnings that
can be extended in inclement weather or hot sunny days, or it can be drawn back during a star filled night for an evening of stargazing.

This area is stepped up to create a terrace that is set apart form the rest of the yard. This is an area that lends itself to great conversation and fun times with family & friends.

One of several conversation areas in this Backyard Garden Plan, this will definitely become a favorite spot for all.

The firepit is round, has the same stone finish as the retaining walls and outdoor kitchen with a poured in place textured concrete cap that matches the cap of the retaining wall and the bands in the concrete decking.

The landscaping around this corner of the yard helps to create that intimate feeling as well as helps to screen off this corner from the rest of the yard.

The Backyard Garden Design Plantings

I would have to say the plants are a minimal part of this Backyard Garden Design but they play a major role in creating an intimate feeling that will lead to your guests feeling comfortable and relaxed.

A secondary role the plants play is to screen off the different areas of the yard and direct traffic where you want it to go. Trees are used along the back to add height and create a "ceiling" to our space.

Ferns help to complete the illusion of a lush natural waterfall in the Master Bedroom Retreat. Most plants are flowering, shade  loving perennials.

No grass or annuals make this a low maintenance backyard. Periodic trimming and deadheading are the only maintenance tasks this garden requires.

Due to varying climate and growing conditions across our continent, it would be impossible to list the plants for this plan that would work everywhere.
